What we got right:
College Basketball:
Wake Forest at #17 Florida State - Wake Forest should have won this game in regulation. They were ahead by two points when Florida State got the ball with five seconds left and went straight at the basket with little resistance. The Seminoles made the shot to tie the game and force overtime. Once it got to the extra five minutes, the Demon Deacons didn’t have enough in the tank, ultimately losing 92-85. In an interesting fact, this was the 11th straight overtime win for Florida State, setting a new NCAA record.
Kansas State at #23 Oklahoma State - Make that 12 straight losses for Kansas State. This was a laugher at halftime, with the Cowboys taking a 35-19 lead into the break. Kansas State had a valiant comeback but fell short. At least they covered the spread for us, as they lost 67-60.
#16 Tennessee at LSU - This is the first of two SEC upsets we correctly predicted on Saturday. LSU had their best defensive performance of the season in the 78-65 win over Tennessee. The Volunteers shot just 36% from the field in the loss. If LSU plays defense like this consistently they will be a tough out come March.
#15 Iowa at Michigan State - Luka Garza had just eight points in this game and the Hawkeyes still won by 30. In the 88-58 win they handed coach Tom Izzo his worst loss in 26 years as Head Coach of Michigan State. The Spartans are not one of the 68 best teams in the country, and very well could not hear their name on Selection Sunday for the first time since 1997.
Arkansas at #10 Missouri - The other SEC upset we correctly predicted was right here. This was a wild game that went into overtime, but in the end the Razorbacks got the win they needed to help their NCAA Tournament chances. Arkansas improved to 8-4 in SEC play, while Missouri dropped to 6-5 with the 86-81 loss.
Northwestern at #25 Rutgers - Rutgers was in control of this game the while way. They handed Northwestern their 11th consecutive loss as they beat the Wildcats 64-50. The Scarlet Knights clamped down defensively, holding Rutgers to just 32% shooting and the 50 points Northwestern scored was their lowest output of the season.
#1 Gonzaga at San Francisco - Gonzaga jumped out to a 20-4 lead behind the inside presence of Drew Timme, and never looked back. Timme had 21 points in the first half, and the Bulldogs put it on cruise control the last 20 minutes to get the 100-61 win. Corey Kispert was held to just 12 points, but that is the beauty of Gonzaga’s offense. You never know where the points are going to come from.
North Carolina at #9 Virginia - We were correct in that the Basketball Gods punished the Tar Heels, as Virginia put on a defensive clinic in the 60-48 win. North Carolina made just two three point baskets as the stifling Cavaliers defense did not let them have any space. No North Carolina player scored in double figures, which hasn’t happened since March 4th, 1966.
#20 USC at Washington St. - This game went exactly how we thought it would. The Cougars had no answer for Evan Mobley on the inside, as the projected lottery pick had 20 points in the 76-65 win. The biggest downfall for Washington St. was that they went just 3-25 from three. A lot of those shots were good looks too.
NBA:
Houston at New York - If gambling were legal in the state we were in we would have bet everything on the Knicks to win. We would have been rewarded, as New York crushed Houston 121-99. The Rockets need Christian Wood back in the worst way, as they have lost five in a row with him out.
Brooklyn at Golden State - This game was the high scoring affair we thought it would be. The Nets got the 134-117 win behind a balanced scoring effort, with all five starters scoring at least 15 points. The Warriors were led by the 27 points of Stephen Curry, but he didn’t have enough help as the Nets got the win.
Miami at Utah - Utah won this game defensively. That is the great thing about the Jazz, they are a complete team. In the 112-94 win they held Miami to 40% shooting and beat them on the glass 59-50. Even if Utah doesn’t have the best shooting day, like they did here, they still find ways to win.
What we got wrong:
College Basketball:
Indiana at #4 Ohio State - With Indiana possibly playing for their NCAA Tournament lives, they needed this win. Ohio State had other thoughts as they ran past the Hoosiers 78-59. The Buckeyes are solidifying their case for a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and right now it is tough to bet against them.
#22 Loyola Chicago at Drake - This game was a surprise to us. After starting the year 18-0, Drake has lost their two out of their last three games. This was a three point game at halftime, but Loyola raced past Drake in the second half, outscoring them 50-20 in the 81-54 win. These two teams run it back on Sunday.
#12 Oklahoma at #14 West Virginia - This was the best game of the day. It needed two extra periods to decide a winner, with Oklahoma prevailing 91-90 in double overtime. Neither team led by more than ten points in the fifty minutes of this game. That is how evenly these teams are matched. We hope to see round three in the Big 12 Tournament.
TCU at #13 Texas - Texas got back on track with a 70-55 win over TCU, severely hurting the Horned Frogs chances at an NCAA Tournament bid. This is the type of game Texas needed as they go into a big game with Oklahoma on Tuesday.
Georgia at #11 Alabama - Alabama scored a season high 115 points in routing Georgia, and the Crimson Tide put the country on notice that they are an offensive force. Alabama went 18-30 from three point land in completely dominating the Bulldogs. If Alabama shoots like this no one can beat them, not even Baylor or Gonzaga.
#5 Villanova at #19 Creighton - We learned a lot about how good Creighton is in this game. They shot 60% from the field and only committed nine turnovers in the 86-70 win over the Wildcats. We have talked a lot of crap about the Blue Jays this year, but this was an impressive win.
NBA:
Philadelphia at Phoenix - Make that five wins in a row for Phoenix, who move into the four spot in the Western Conference with the 120-11 win over the 76ers. Devin Booker scored 36 points in the win, while Chris Paul added 18 points and 10 assists for the Suns. Joel Embiid had 35 points for 76ers, but Philadelphia got only 20 bench points in the loss.
Indiana at Atlanta - The Hawks have now lost six of their last seven games as they fell 125-113 to the Pacers on Saturday night. Indiana won this game in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Hawks 41-26 in the final frame. Doug McDermott scored 26 points in the win for Indiana, while Clint Capela scored 24 points in the loss.
