What we got right:
College Basketball:
#3 Michigan at #21 Wisconsin - This was the first game for Michigan in over three weeks. We thought their would be rust early, and that is exactly what happened. At the halftime break, Wisconsin was up by 12. In the second half the Wolverines shook off the rust, outscored the Badgers by 20, and took home the 67-69 win.
NBA:
Portland at Dallas - Make that four wins in a row for the Blazers. This was a high scoring affair like we thought it would be, with Portland getting the 121-118 victory over Dallas. The Blazers won this game in the third quarter, as they outscored the Mavericks 45-30 in that frame. Damian Lillard led the way with 34 points for Portland, while Luka Doncic dropped 44 in the loss for the Mavericks.
Orlando at Phoenix - Orlando just has too many injuries right now. They aren’t even competitive in most games. Phoenix won the game 109-90, earning their sixth win in a row to keep pace in the Western Conference standing. Devin Booker scored 27 points for the Suns, who held the Magic to 6-35 behind the three point line.
Memphis at Sacramento - Another game for the Kings where their defense didn’t show up, as they allowed over 120 points again. In the 124-110 loss the Grizzlies shot 53% from the field. We know Sacramento’s defense is bad, and their offense isn’t good enough to keep up. Especially when they have 17 turnovers and go 8-33 from the three point line.
What we got wrong:
College Basketball:
#22 Loyola Chicago at Drake - Make it two losses in two days for us between these two teams. A day after losing by 27, Drake got revenge by beating Loyola Chicago 51-50 in overtime. This was not a pretty game as neither team shot above 35% from the field, but Drake made one more play down the stretch to get the win.
NBA:
Boston at Washington - Make that two head scratching losses in a row for the Celtics. In the 104-91 loss to Washington, Boston’s offense was completely absent. They shot just 35% from the field, had 17 turnovers, and only had six fast break points. The Wizards didn’t do much better in shooting 39% from the field, but Bradley Beal scored 35 points to help Washington get back in the win column.
Minnesota at Toronto - Karl-Anthony Towns scored seven of his 20 points late in the fourth quarter as the Timberwolves snapped a four game losing streak with a 116-112 win over the Raptors. We still don’t know which Toronto team is going to show up from game to game. While that is frustrating for us, we can only imagine what it is doing to head coach Nick Nurse.
San Antonio at Charlotte - Had we known that Gordon Hayward wasn’t going to play for the Hornets, we would have picked the Spurs. Unfortunately we did not know that, and the Spurs walked away with the 122-110 win. San Antonio improved its record to 16-11 and is trying to force their way in a top four seed in the Western Conference.
New Orleans at Detroit - That is now two impressive wins in a row for the Detroit Pistons, as they beat the Pelicans 123-112 on Sunday. Mason Plumlee had has first career triple double in leading the Pistons to the victory. The loss dropped the Pelicans to 11-15 this season, and you have to say they are one of the bigger disappointments in the Western Conference.
Milwaukee at Oklahoma City - This game was tied entering the fourth quarter. We thought that Giannis and the Bucks would do what they always do and pull away late in the game. It wasn’t meant to be in this game, as the Thunder made the plays late to earn the 114-109 win. Justin Jackson scored a season high 22 points, including a late three pointer to seal the deal for Oklahoma City.
Los Angeles Lakers at Denver - Nikola Jokic got his sixth triple double of the season as the Nuggets beat the Lakers 122-105. The big news in this game was Anthony Davis appeared to injure his Achilles. We don’t know how serious the injury is yet, but obviously if Davis is going to miss some time that puts even more pressure on LeBron James.
Cleveland at Los Angeles Clippers - The Clippers didn’t need Paul George in this one. Lou Williams filled the void left by George’s absence, scoring 30 points in the 128-111 victory for the Clippers. The loss was the seventh in a row for the Cavaliers, who dropped to 10-18 this season.
